Information lifecycle management

All information has a lifespan, throughout which information’s value to an organisation fluctuates according to time and events, until it becomes obsolete.

For example, once a life assurance policy has matured on an agreed target date, been paid out and has been classified as ‘out of force’, that policy information’s lifecycle status becomes ‘archive’. The value of that information is then very low to the organisation. After a designated retention period has elapsed, this information would then need to be securely destroyed.

Information lifecycle management (ILM) is a component of IAM and allows organisations to store their information appropriately for the access and use demanded by business at each stage of its life. ILM enables:

  • service-level delivery
  • optimal storage costs
  • automated storage management
  • greater business efficiency
  • faster response to changing information storage requirements

ILM is also a combination of process and products, which can be integrated with an organisation’s existing business processes without adding unnecessary risk, ensuring business continuity and lowered cost of ownership.
